| After the first Saturday of the
2008 season, Spen Victoria CC First XI find themselves nestled behind
Gomersal in second spot in the Division Two table.
Obviously it is somewhat premature to begin thinking about promotion, but a new look eleven, with only two players remaining from last years side, seemed to have bedded quickly as they posted a score of 176 at Spen Lane before dismissing Undercliffe for only 100. Batting first, Peter Jackson, in his first innings since his return as captain, posted 85 ably supported by overseas player Naeemmuddin Qazi in a second wicket stand of 134 propelling Spen to a good position entering the final ten overs. Qazi, having only arrived the previous Wednesday, opened his Spen account with a half century, finishing on 54 in his first appearance for the club. The pick of the bowlers was James Russell who bagged five wickets from his thirteen overs at a cost of 52 runs. In reply Undercliffe were somewhat toothless with the bat. Five players got in to double figures but were never allowed the time to settle and go on from there by a tight Spen attack. New signings Imran Amin and Mohammed Maroof both came away with 3 wickets supported by tight spells from Rob Warriner, Adam Brown and Maz Bhatti. The win marks an important start for Spen who require a big improvement from lasts seasons efforts, but this is certainly a step in the right direction. |
