Mirfield
Vs Spen Victoria At
Mirfield Park Heavy
Woollen Cup Match Tuesday
6th May 2008 On a sunny
evening at Mirfield Park, Spen struggled against a well drilled Mirfield
side in the first round of the Heavy Woollen cup. This was Spen’s first
game of the season and they struggled batting wise as they were short of
match practice. Matty “Mr
Consistent” Haley (4,1,1,14) shared the new ball with under thirteen’s
star Tom Raven (2,1,0,12). They both bowled good tight opening overs with
only five runs coming from them but Haley tied Mirfield down even further
by getting a wicket maiden. Sam Sharp (4,1,0,12) and Dom Oldham (4,1,1,14)
helped tie down the batting team even further. A loose bit of bowling from
Captain Oli Davison (4,0,1,38) helped Mirfield accelerate. There was a
great spell of bowling at the back end of the innings by Vivek Sharma who
claimed two wickets in two overs and only went for ten runs. Mirfield
finished up on 113-5 in their 20 overs. Spen’s fielding was poor as
there were too many misfields and runs where there shouldn’t have been.
(Thanks to young Rob Dowling for being substitute fielder). Spen opened up
the batting with Newcomer Daraj Sharma (bowled for 12) and Oli Davison
(run out 1). Spen consistently lost wickets as Rodwell (5), Sharp (8) and
Oldham (4) all got out to brilliant catches. Oakes (1) quickly followed as
he got his stumps shattered by a great ball. Anthony Dowling (9 not out)
and Rishi Seedhar (3 not out) managed to keep out the attack for the
remaining few overs. Spen collapsed to 49-6 and lost by fifty-five runs. Match Report by
