Spen put up good fight against local rivals

After the defeat at East Bierley the previous Sunday you could be forgiven for thinking that morale in the Spen dressing room was low. But this was not reflected in what was their best batting performance of the year.

After a steady opening partnership of 70, before Peter Jackson was run out, Spen looked to have the groundwork of a good total. overseas star Naeemuddin Qazi pushed on, taking the Gomersal bowling apart as he pushed past 50 and then his maiden century at Spen. He then let rip and began not only taking the bowling apart but even the local houses as he showered the boundary at every end of the ground.

But Gomersal are known as having one of the best batting line ups in the Division if not the league and were quick to reply. Richard Gould, as is his way, began steadily, building the innings. He was supported by Bradley Parker until the former county player let a loose shot give Spen captain Peter Jackson an easy catch.

Gould was then joined by Naveed, a player who had impressed at Great Horton in 2007 and therefore made the move to help Gomersals push for promotion. Both he and Gould looked at ease at the crease, not even offering a chance to a helpless Spen bowling attack. They pushed along, disheartening the Spen team, reaching their winning total of 229 with 8 overs to spare. Naveed had reached 100 not out, off only 75 balls, and Gould was unfortunately stuck on 94 not out, only denied a century by the scoreboard.
